Gov. Shettima intervenes over water scarcity as power outage hits Maiduguri

Gov. Kashim Shettima

Governor Kashim Shettima has ordered an immediate palliative to the problem of water scarcity in Maiduguri with the deployment  two generators with the conbined electrical power of  1,850KVA  to the Maiduguri Water Treatment Plant, the Special Adviser on Media and Strategy to Gov. Kashim Shettima, Mr. Isa Gusau has said.

Mr. Gusau in a statement explained that the governor was worried with the acute water scarcity in the town which is  caused as a result of power outage from the National grid couple with Boko Haram attack on power installations at Molai.

He noted that Gov. Kashim has gving specific directives to the  Commissioner of Housing and Energy, Engr. Yuguda Saleh Vungas  to personally supervise and ensure the generators are installed and water supply restored to the metropolis latest today Friday.

The Statement reads:

“Power supply is now restored at the Maiduguri water treatment plant with water soon to be pumped for distribution to residents.

“Water supply was interrupted by outages of power supply from the national grid in addition to insurgent attack on power installations at Mollai which was addressed. Even though there were standby generators at the plant and Alau dam, particular components of water generation equipment relied on dedicated, uninterrupted power lines to function.

“Worried by scarcity of water supply caused by the power outage, Governor Kashim Shettima directed the deployment of two high powered electricity generators, with combine capacity of 1,850 KVA, to power the Maiduguri water treatment plant and the alau dam. The two heavy duty generators were being moved from the industrial park at Njimtilo and another from a warehouse at the government house, Maiduguri.

“The Governor directed the commissioner for housing and energy, Engr Yuguda Saleh Vungas to personally supervise and ensure both installations were completed today, Friday.
The Governor also directed that all boreholes be powered while the ministry of water resources ensures water distribution is accelerated.

“The Commissioner, who is currently at the Maiduguri treatment plant confirmed that at 11:30am, a 1,100 KVA generator was installed at the treatment plant and it was already being powered to restore the pumping of water.

“Vungas also said that he was about moving a 750 KVA generator for installation at Alau dam so as to restore power there for water distribution”, the statement said.

The Statement also conveys Governor Shettima empathy with citizens affected by both power and water shortages and appeals for more patience, assuring that he is strictly supervising government officials to ensure work continues round the clock in determined effort to address the problem.
