How Yobe Emergency Management Agency uncovers fake list of windstorm victims from traditional rulers

Some traditional rulers in Yobe State have submitted fictitious names as victims of the last two devastating windstorms that claims lives and destroyed millions of property in the state.

The Executive Secretary of YOSEMA, Dr. Mohammed Goje disclosed this at the distribution of non-food relief materials of victims of the disaster in Damaturu.

According to him, some of the Bulamas and Lawanis engaged in sending fictitious names to the agency whenever a disstater occurred but the agency has decided to physically validate such information because of the breach of trust among the people and the traditional rulers.

Dr. Goje informed that a community which tried to shortchanged the agency was caught by it dubious action.

“We witnessed a lot of discrepancies, there was a community that we went to and what we discovering was alarming. We got a list of 35 houses destroyed in that community but when we got there, we did your assessment and only 9 houses were destroyed. This is what we will continue to do until we get to the last household,” he disclosed.

Premium Times recalled that some people have lost their lives and property worth millions of naira destroyed by the rainstorm.

Dr, Goje at the flagging  off  announced that over 450 households will benefit from the relief support which is in building materials and other household items.

He added  that 8 Local government Areas out of the 17 were affected by the devastating rainstorm on the 8th and 10th June 2020.Dr.Goje explained that  “Gov. Mai Mala directed that his agency carry out the impact assessment of the disaster and make immediate intervention which is why we are here”.

He added that,” what we are doing here is just the flagg off of the distribution of the materials. We decided to select just 50 heads of household to avoid excessive crowd in the spirit of COVID 19. But I can assure you that our team will immediately swing into action and ensure that everyone gets what is due for him.

“I want to tell you that we have our teams across the affected local governments as we speak and the material are on their way to those destinations for distribution”, Dr. Goje explained.

The Items received by each of the victims include ; Bags of cements, Bundles of roofing sheets (Zinc), Woods ,Nylon Mats, Clothes, Bucket among others.

One of the community leaders Modu Mustapha thanked government for the gesture adding the items donated them will aid them recover their shelter.
