Rape: Gov. Buni reads riot act to violators, tasks community leaders to report cases

Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni has thrown his weight behind the punishment of any one found guilty of rape in the state.

The governor who spoke through his spokesman Mamman Mohammed also called on traditional rulers, community leaders and parents to cooperate with security operatives and fishout such characters within the society and hand them over to the appropriate authorities.

Gov. Mai Mala pledged  government will fully apply the state laws on rape which stipulates life imprisonment for rape cases involving minors  and where the victim is an adult, the culprit shall be jailed for a term of twenty-five years.

"The full wrath of the law will be applied on anyone who is proven to have committed rape in the state,” Gov. Buni warned.

The Yobe  State Law Against Rape, Kidnapping and Unnatural Offences which was signed in 2019 provides “life imprisonment for rape against minors and up to 25 years imprisonment for raping adults”.According to the statement, Governor Buni charged  the police and judiciary to conduct adequate investigations and expedite action on the judicial process and procedures.

The Governor warned that government will not tolerate any abuse deliberately caused by reckless persons who have no control over themselves.ImpactOnlineNigeria reports that the rate of rape has been on the increase in the state especially involving minors with some of the cases involving security men.

Recently, the Police Public Relation Officer in Yobe State ASP Dungus Abdulkarim has confirmed that some rape cases involving police personal are being investigated at the state CID.
