FMC Yola unveils third successful separated conjoined twins

The Federal Medical Centre, Yola today unveiled to the public another set of conjoined twins successfully separated at the hospital.

 

Grace and Mercy were born on the 12th, December, 2019 at Nembe General Hospital in Bayelsa State to the family of Mr and Mrs, Ayebaiemi, a 27 year old Okada driver from Bayelsa.

 

The twins were however flown into Yola by the Nigeria Airforce after the Federal Medical Centre Yenegoa contacted his sister FMC Yola and they agreed to carry out the surgery.

 

Addressing a world press conference in Yola on Saturday, the lead surgeon and Chief Medical Director of Federal Medical Centre, Yola, Prof. Auwal Mohammed Abubakar said the twins were separated free of charge.

 

Prof Abubakar while presenting the case report of the twins said the separation, “The twins were delivered at Nembe General Hospital 12th December 2019. They were referred to Federal Medical Centre Yenegoa where they were well managed and stabilized during the neo-natal time which is a very critical time in the development of the children”.

He added the separation of the babies would have been done long ago but the COVID 19 delayed it for obvious reasons.

 

“We were actually preparing to separate them when three to four months when the covid and because people were apprehensive and we suspended all elective surgeries except emergency surgeries. We however used that window to carry out investigation to know if they were separable. The children had one liver but each of them have their intestine”, Prof Abubakar explained.

 

Prof. Abubakar thank the Chief of Air Staff, Air Mashal Sadiq Abubakar and the Nigeria Air Force for assisting in the airlift of the children from Yenegoa to Yola in the difficult time of the covid.

 

He also commended the Secretary for the Government of the Federation, Mr. Boss Mustapha for his support throughout the stay of the children at the hospital.

 

Gov. Umaru Fintri of Adamawa State was commended the leadership and staff of FMC Yola for their medical feat.

 

He called on the Federal government to make FMC Yola as a centre for the separation of conjoined twins.

 

The governor was represented by his Chief of Staff, Prof Maxwell Gidado.

 

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha who was the Special Guest of Honor at the event said he is proud of the medical team for the successful operation of the babies.

 

I want to commend the medical director of FMC Yola, Prof M. Abubakar for yet separating another set of conjoined twins that came all the ways from Bayelsa, the Niger Delta.

 

He noted that it was a pride for him for the twins to be flown to Yola from Bayelsa from the coast of the Atlantic.

“When I saw on the National network new the evacuation of the twins, Mercy and Grace, as a citizen of Adamawa State and a true son of Yola, what I felt was a sense of pride that despite our being stocked in the country the Cameroon, we still have a lot to offer this nation. If not, why transport a set of conjoined twins all the way from Bayelsa at the  of the Atlantic crossing many cities over an hour to be brought to Yola for this exercise,” Mr. Mustapha said.

 

The representative of the Chief of Air Staff, announced that the twins will also be flown back to Bayelsa on Saturday.

 

Our correspondent was also at the Air Force base to witness the departure of the twins with their parents back to Yenegoa.
