MCRP engages stakeholders on project ownership and sustainability

The absence of Community ownership and lack of  sustainability have been identified as major causes of project failure in the country



To address these problems the  Multisectoral Crisis Recovery Project(MCRP)has converged a meeting of stakeholders to come up with best ideas to solve the problems.

 

The Multisectoral Crisis Recovery Project MCRP is part of the initial World Bank response to the Boko Haram North-East crisis.



The project serves as a node of convergence in supporting the overall recovery efforts in the north east BAY states which is  Borno, Adamawa and Yobe. 



The meeting which was convened at the instance of the MCRP office In Yobe with special focus on WASH had in attendance the Hon. Commissioner for Water Resource, Sen. Alkali Jajere, representative of UNICEF, UNOCHA and other key stakeholders in the WASH sector.



On the other side of the divide, community leaders and traditional rulers as well as Youth groups and associations were brought on the same table to voice out possible solutions to addressing the problems.



During his welcome remarks and presentation, the Project Manager MCRP, Yobe Alhaji Musa Idi Jidawa announced the meeting is conceived to fashion out ways of safeguarding projects collapse at community level.



Alhaji Jidawa regretted the attitudes of individuals, community and groups towards government project while calling for attitudinal change across board.



According to him, community ownership of such project will lead to protection and adequate sustainability resulting to long impact and value for money.



He announced that the MCRP thought it wise to bring the stakeholders on the same table to sample their views and fashion out the best way to safeguard the huge investments of the World Bank in the WASH sector in the state.






“The huge investment of the World Bank through this project especially in the WASH sector cannot be allowed to go down the drain.

 

“Our objective is to bring everyone on board and sample all opinion and  come out with best global practices that will enhance community ownership and sustainability of these project for a longer impact on the communities,” Jidawa explained.

 

Alhaji Jidawa also mentioned other specific objectives of the meeting to include: 

  • To initiate the development of a comprehensive analytical framework that can be used to analyze and operationalize a more sustainable service delivery approach for rural water supply in Yobe State
  • To review/learn cases and good practices for sustainability from WASH sector actors “knowledge in implementation”
  • To prepare ground for informed policy directions to improve WASH projects sustainability in the State under the able leadership of His Excellency Hon. Mai Mala Buni, the Executive Governor of Yobe State. 



The Hon. Commissioner for Water Resources in the State, Sen. Alkali Jajere described the intervention of the World Bank in Yobe State as strategic especially paying attention to WASH.



He noted that the administration of Gov. Mai Mala Buni will continue to demonstrate the political will that will drive the development in all human aspects for citizenry.
