The Nigerian Bar Association(NBA), Damaturu branch, Yobe State have rejected the decision of the National Executive Committee of the Association for the withdrawal of Gov. Nasir El-Rufai as the guest speaker at the forthcoming National Conference of the Association.
The NBA in Damaturu through its Chairman, Barr. UN Lukman in a statement he personally signed and obtained by ImpactOnlineNigeria called on the NEC to immediately rescind their decision and tender an unreserved apology to Gov. El-Rufai of face a boycott from the branch at the forthcoming conference..
The Statement also explained that the decision of NEC on Gov. El-Rufai was presumptuous and baseless , adding that the decision was unpopular portraying Gov. El-Rufai in bad light.
The full text of the statement reads:
“The Nigeria Bar Association, Damaturu branch wishes to write and express her strongest and most powerful protest against the position taken by the National Executive Committee(NEC) meeting held on the 20th August 2020 via virtual zoom where a purported resolution was reached to withdraw the invitation of His Excellency Mal. Nasir El-Rufai as the guest speaker in the forthcoming Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association which was predicated completely on disingenuous, meritless and baseless imagination.
“The decision of the NEC is against the pillars of natural justice on the presumption of innocence and fair hearing as enshrined in the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 and equal opportunity to all citizens of this country.
“At no time during the meeting that our NEC members from Damaturu branch were afforded the right to vote on this resolution which we consider as thin air, lies and deception against the person of Mal. Nasir El-Rufai.
“The purported NEC meeting is a somber affair that is a mockery of professionalism and equal treatment which our resolution is sincerely concealing hatred and disunity amongst the Association. There is too much needed to be done for the paramount interest of all members of our noble association. We need to go back to work for the mutual benefit of all members than engage in ventures that will drag our image in the murky waters of ethno-religious and other primordial interests outside the purview of our association.
“NBA Damaturu is therefore convincingly perturbed and accordingly registers her unequivocal protest against that decision for the purpose of history and posterity with the following demands:
1. To immediately take drastic measures to set aside this unpopular resolution withdrawing the invitation of Mal. Nasir El-Rufai as gusts speaker at the forthcoming conference.
2. To tender an unreserved apology to His Excellency, Mal. Nasir El-Rufai.
“Anything short of that will amount to we members of NBA Damaturu branch to hold members of NEC responsible for an unpopular decision, perversion of justice and abuse of power.
“It is also our resolution at the NBA Damaturu to withdraw from the forthcoming conference in the event that our demands are not addressed,” the statement said.
ImpactOnlineNigeria recalled that the NBA had issued a withdrawal for Gov. El-Rufai as the guest Speaker for their forthcoming National Conference.
