 From JOE Hemba

The people of Gwer West Local Government are in celebration mood as Gov. Samuel Ortom has elevated Barrister Kenneth Aondohembafan Achabo as his Special Adviser in the Bureau for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.

Barrister Achabo’s appointment is coming at the heels of the demises Late Jerome Torshimbe who passed on on the 15/09/2020 occupying the office.

A few days after his burial, Gov. Ortom in his magnanimity decided to retain the office to Gwer West and from Late Torshimbe’s domain with the appointment of the 47 year old Barr. Achabo who was his Principal Special Assistant on Waste Management and Environment.

Following the appointment , the social media went frenzy as youths across the state,  Gwer west in particular set the social media ablaze with the smiling photos of Barr. Achabo accompanied with felicitations and good will messages over his new appointment.

Born to the family of Late Chief JK Achabo, an amiable Police Officer, who retired at the rank of a Chief Superintendent Officer but decided to come back to his people and serve as a second class chief for almost two decades before his demise, Barrister Kenneth was already well grounded and groomed for leadership and responsibility from his late father.

As a son of a police officer, he was born in 1973 in Imo state. He had his elementary education in different states in Nigeria.

His eventful secondary education was however at the famous Mount Saint Gabriel College, Makurdi under the tutelage of Late Fr. Angus Frezer, a centre of religious morale and humility which have moulded his life as a humble and simple jolly fellow.

Barr Kenneth Achabo came face to face with competitive politics in the 2019 General Elections when he vied for House of Representative to represent Gwer/ Gwer West Federal constituency, but the political intrigues at the moment skimmed him out at the primary stage of the elections.

He was appointed in 2019 by Gov. Ortom to serve as his Principal Special Assistant on Waste Management and Environment.

Hon. Barr. Ken Achabo as he is fondly called by the youth and his friends is widely travelled. He is married with children with a very deep family value.

Dr. Ali Manzo listening to a participant at the CDD/NOA workshop in Damaturu

By  JOE Hemba, Damaturu

The Centre for Democracy and Development, CDD and the National Orientation Agency have struck a partnership to reverse the negative narrative of the Boko Haram insurgency through peace building and reconciliation.

The CDD at a workshop in Damaturu where it has brought together 50 participants comprising of the officials of the National orientation Agency in the state and some community leaders is aim at capacitating them on the key drivers of peace building at community levels  using the Islamic perspective through its flagship program; “Sulhu Alheri Ne”.

In his opening speech, Yobe State Director, National Orientation Agency(NOA), Mal. Ali Audu said the wide spread of NOA across the country is an asset for organization like CDD to take advantage of in the enlightenment of the communities on peace building.

According to him, the core mandate of NOA which is the sensitization, mobilization and awareness creation on government programs, policies and activities will drive the message of peace down to the grass root through the Community Mobilization Officers(COMOs.

He added that “CDD and NOA are co-created partners in progress”, while pledging to work closely with CDD to counter violent extremism.

“Let me assure you that, the National Orientation Agency as a social engineering institution in the discharge of its mandate, lunched the National Campaign on Building a people of peace in the Northeast Geo-political zone on the ills and dangers of these prevailing centrifugal forces in the country and provided platform for continuous engagement with different stakeholders on how to curb them,” Mal. Audu informed.

The facilitator of the program in the State, Dr. Ali Manzo said the trainees are expected to preach the message of peace to their various communities after the workshop.

He noted that the collaboration with NOA and community leaders was to take advantage of the wide network of NOA to drive home to all nook and crannies of the state the message of peace so as to change the attitude of the people towards the Boko Haram crisis which has negatively affected the region for long.

Dr. Manzo noted that CDD will be involving other stakeholders in the communities apart from the current set of participants to affect the necessary change.

Earlier while welcoming participants for the workshop, Senior Research Fellow with CDD prof. Mala Mustapha who spoke through a webinar charged the participants to pay attention to the training and make the best use out of it.

He described the training as very important especially with a strategic partner like NOA and community leaders as the region craves for peace after the devastating boko Haram crisis.

TRIBUTE: REMEMBERING ABUBAKAR MUHAMMAD MAILAFIYA; THE SHINING LIGHT OF MAILAFIYA FAMILY:

Late Abubakar Mohammad Mailafiya

One of the hardest truth of life is knowing people we love die, people we need die, people we don't know die, and eventually we'll die ourselves it is sad truth to realizes.

Today I pick up my pen to write about the unsung hero of our time and a legendary reference to our future generation; the late ABUBAKAR MUHAMMAD MAILAFIYA who passed on over a decade ago but he's always fresh in our thought and prayers.

Abubakar was a very unique person, he was a man with a real spirit who was always willing to assist people. He'll go to the extra mile to assist people even people unknown to him. I'm not sure that we have two (2) of his type in the whole of Mailafiya family, I say this because most people spend out of their abundance, some were even stingy with their abundance, but ABUBAKAR MAILAFIYA could go to borrow money to assist people even when he was on his bed. This is the one thing I still don't understand, he get himself neck on deep dept just because he wanted to assist people, he hated seeing people suffering.

All along I stood with him during the good, the bad and the ugly moments of his life. I stayed with him when he falls sick as a result of diabetes complication and was admitted at the university of Maiduguri teaching hospital (umth) throughout the time he spend in the hospital (6months). I sleep on the bare floor of the hospital all throughout the period doing all the errands for him hoping and praying that he get back to his feet once again.

As if he knows that he's going to leave the world he told me a lot of things that I don't even suppose to know at that time as if he was preparing me to take over from him as the Emirate Council Secretary which I eventually did after he passed on.

I believed that he was just sent to the world to fulfil a purpose which he did to the best of his ability and I think at the right time his creator ( Allah) called him. If he's to be assessed based on his tolerance, patient, generosity, relationship with people and above all God fearing instinct I think he scored A+.All I can say is that we're all imperfect. May Allah look the other way when it comes to his imperfections and look at the people he helped with his little resources, look at the people he rescued by investing on their medical and so on.

I raised my hand up in prayers that Almighty Allah will forgive his sins and shortcomings and reward him with the highest abode in jannatul firdausi Aameen thumma Aameen.

You'll always remained in my thought and prayers until eternity comes in sha'a Allah. I rest my case for today, till tomorrow in sha'a Allah.

IPAC kicks as Yobe shifts LG elections to next year

Dr. Mammman, YBSIEC Boss

By JOE Hemba, Damaturu

The Inter Party Advisory Council(IPAC), Yobe State chapter says it does not support the postponement of the Local Government election in the State to February next year.

The Yobe State Chairman of IPAC Umar Mohammed Kukuri while fielding question from journalists in Damaturu said the decision of the electoral body in the state does not have the blessing of his members but promised to come up with a decision after the executive members in the state have met.

“At the moment, I cannot give you a definite answer on the decision of IPAC in the state on the shifting of the date for the election next year by the State Independent Electoral Committee. We cant say we are confortable with the decision until we meet as executive, inform our members and take a decision on the matter to communicate to you people and the public,” Kukuri said.

IMPACTONLINENIGERIA  reported that Yobe State Independent Electoral Commission had announced that local government elections will be conducted in the state on December 5, 2020.

But in a twist, the Chairman of the Electoral body, Dr. Mamman Mohammed yesterday announced a shift in the election attributing it to a surge in COVID 19 cases in the state.

“On 4 of September, 2020. I released the schedule of activities for the Local Government council elections fixed for the 5th December, 2020 as the date of election.

“On that day, I stated our preparedness to conduct the elections in substantial compliance with the COVID -19 protocols and guidelines as prescribed by WHO

“Regrettably, our State has recently recorded a slight resurgence of the COVID-19 with the two cases confirmed”, he said.

Dr. Mamman explained that the resurgence of the two cases of covid 19 has forced the commission to shift the elections in the state so as to safeguard the lives of the people of the state, stressing  that, “Yobe state government is on top of the situation and the State Ministry of Health has taken positive steps to identify and isolate persons who have been in contact with the incidence cases”.

He added that, “after due consultation with our critical stakeholders, we are Complied to readjust the date of our proposed elections to prevent the spread of escalation of the incidence of manifestation in Yobe State. The need to be proactive in saving one life in Yobe State is a compelling and is a cogent reason to reschedule the date of this election in accordance with the law of the elections.

" Consequently, our local government Councils election earlier scheduled for 5Th December, 2020 is hereby shifted to hold on 27th February, 2021. A new schedule of election activities is being reviewed and will be released very soon. It will provide armful time for primaries and other election requirement for qualification of candidates,” Dr. Mamman announced.

IMPACTONLINENIGERIA  checks revealed that Yobe's corona virus burden is 75 cases with both 8 death and 8 active cases with 59 persons discharged compared to Edo State that has over 2000 cases but held an election less than a week ago.

Al-Hilal vs. Coronavirus: a story of heroes who refuse to fall

This is not a fairy tale or a Hollywood film: it is the true story of Al-Hilal, the Saudi team that took on Covid-19 and won. The story of a team that kept fighting and refused to accept defeat despite 24 of its staff, including 15 players, getting infected.

FIFA wrote on Twitter: “Al Hilal showed heroic spirit and overcame difficult circumstances, doing what was needed to reach the knockout stages, despite the absence of many of its players, coming top in the second group with 11 points.”

The world football governing body paid special tribute to Al-Hilal’s players, especially those infected by coronavirus.

“A special greeting to Al-Hilal and our wishes for a quick recovery for all,” it said.
The heroes of Al-Hilal headed to Qatar full of hope in their quest to defend their title as Asian champions, a prize they won last November when they beat Japan’s Urawa Red Diamonds in the final at Japan’s Saitama Stadium.

We’ve become used to seeing Al-Hilal win. It has achieved more than any other Asian team, becoming the Asian team of the century. So its supporters were overwhelmingly optimistic ahead of the AFC Champions League. The team was in its best form after winning the Saudi Pro League, eight points ahead of its nearest rival.

But that optimism turned to anxiety as the team announced that six of its players had caught the Covid-19 disease before the first match in the AFC Champions League group stages, including captain Salman al-Faraj, star midfielder Nawaf al-Abed and key right-back Mohammad al-Barik, whose exceptional crossing has been key to many of Al Hilal’s goals.

In its first match, Al-Hilal faced Uzbek team Pakhtakor, clinching a hard-fought victory in the final second to come top in its group. Watching the match, there was a strange sensation that no players were missing; such was the existing team’s fighting spirit.

But coronavirus continued to attack, more ferociously than before. Soon, 12 players were infected, including the star of the Saudi national team Salem Al-Dosari, Italian playmaker Sebastian Giovinco and Saudi national left back Yaser Yaser Al-Shahrani.

Then the biggest disaster of all: French striker and the best player in last year’s AFC Champions League, Bafetimbi Gomis. By now, 15 Al-Hilal players had the disease.

Al-Hilal was set to be unable to play the next match against Iran’s Shahr Khodro, as under AFC rules, at least 13 players must be on its line-up before the game and the team only had nine available. Al-Hilal asked for the match to be postponed by a day or two but the AFC roundly rejected its request, forcing it to play or forfeit the match.

So the team borrowed three players from its under-18s squad, and the AFC allowed it to swap three goalkeepers who had come down with coronavirus, replacing them with two keepers from the youth team.

A lesser team would have collapsed under the pressure of playing a crucial match and needing a single point to progress to the knockout stages. On the starting line-up were two players who were unknown to Al-Hilal’s supporters. Moreover, on the reserve bench were just three players: two keepers and a member of the youth team. That left manager Răzvan Lucescu with just one available substitute.

But Al-Hilal again showed exceptional fighting spirit and nearly won, but the new face of Asian football, Mansour Al-Bishi, narrowly missed what would have been the decisive goal. The team battled its way to a draw, enough to gain the crucial point it needed to progress to the next stage.

Al-Hilal’s battle with the coronavirus will continue, and it is possible that more players will be infected. But the team has shown that it will fight on, down to its very last player.

TRIBUTE: Adieu Gallant Hero of Our Time Colonel DC Bako, Commander 25 Task Force Brigade Operation Lafiya Dole

By Brig. Gen. SK Usman (Rtd) mni

The news of the demise of Colonel Dahiru Chiroma Bako of 25 Task Force Brigade, Operation LAFIYA DOLE is indeed a shock and heart wrenching to virtually everyone who knows him irrespective of the family. The outpouring of emotions, tributes and prayers over his demise, is a testimony to the fact that he is a significant loss to the nation. He was a gentleman and a professional military officer in all ramifications. He was rightly nicknamed and referred to as Sarkin Yaki by colleagues and all those that worked with him. The late Colonel Dahiru Chiroma Bako was not just a Colonel and a Brigade Commander. He was a personification of the soldiering profession and a great asset to the nation. Based on his impeccable qualities as a soldier's soldier and wonderful person, he was loved by all. He was one of the most gallant, courageous and highly dedicated senior Army officers of the Nigerian Army that I have ever known. He was very dependable, hardworking, humble, a man of few words, forthright and down to earth. You always know where you stand with on any issue or matter. He never complains, let alone grumble, no matter the heat of the battle, pressure or circumstances.

Colonel Bako was one of the heroes of our time whose contributions to the war against terrorism and insurgency are unquantifiable. He is the type who believed in leading from the front and personally attend to matters. He motivates troops and all those that were with him in the theatre. There is no doubt that his death early today morning at a military hospital in Maiduguri following an injury sustained in an ambush yesterday, is a sad blow to the nation and all those that knew him. After clearing the ambush, the heroic Bako was evacuated and successfully operated upon, by a team of doctors from within the military and the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital and was stable to the point of performing early morning prayers. The Army was determined to give the best medical care to enable him to recover fully, but death came calling suddenly.

Over time we met each other in the course of duty especially in the north east when he was Commanding Officer of 233 Battalion. The last time we met was in Geidam, while he was an Acting Commander, 27 Task Force Brigade, after an attack on one of the locations under his command. Since then, we have not met but kept in touch through phone calls. A very respectful friend who was always there for his colleagues and subordinates, especially when in need. A type of field commander who makes public relations and managing the image of the Army easy. Indeed, his impeccable records speak volumes as they earned him an enviable position as the Acting Commander, 27 Task Force Brigade, a place strictly for very senior officers beyond the rank he was at that period. As Acting Brigade Commander, he demonstrated his battlefield efficiency on several occasions as he successfully liberated and secured so many towns, captured an uncountable number of terrorists in his area of responsibility which falls mostly within Yobe State.

As a result of these exploits, the terrorist dreaded him a lot as he thwarted several of their efforts, including smuggling and banditry. His presence in front lines was a morale booster to the fighting forces. It is therefore saddening that such a gallant officer will pay the supreme price following an ambush by Boko Haram elements. The late Brigade Commander was such a daring, fearless and courageous war commander that personally led his troops in successful battles against the Boko Haram terrorists. His charismatic and humane disposition endeared him to his troops and the host community, wherever he served. He was so selfless to the point of sponsoring so many needy students and orphans to schools and vocational training.

Therefore, it was not surprising that he was given command of a Brigade again at the rank of Colonel, as his record of service and accomplishments stood him a far from his contemporaries. We will certainly miss you, Colonel DC Bako, Sarkin Yaki. We will continue to cherish your memory, pray for you and all those gallant officers, soldiers, ratings, airmen and women. They paid the supreme price in defence of our fatherland from terrorists and criminal elements. Your death will not be in vain as we take solace and pride in the fact that you died for humanity and as a hero that would forever remember him for his immense contribution to the quest for peace on our land. I wish to convey my deepest condolence to the Chief of Army Staff, Nigerian Army, Lieutenant General TY Buratai, Theatre Commander, Operation LAFIYA DOLE, General Officer Commanding 7 Division, the gallant troops of Operation LAFIYA DOLE, in particular those in 25 Task Force Brigade and his loving family over this sad loss.

As I pour out my feelings from my heart and personally mourn his demise, I seize this moment to appeal to the military leadership, especially the Nigerian Army to give Colonel Dahiru Chiroma Bako a national burial and promotion to the rank of a Brigadier General posthumously. May Allah forgive his shortcomings and grant him Aljannah Firdausi, Amen.

UKaid Expends £1.4m On Vulnerables In Borno

 By Melvin Ibe, Maiduguri

Mercy Vincent Foundation and EYN Project, Maiduguri ,in partnership with Christian Aid Nigeria with funding from Ukaid has disbursed N20,000 each to 1080 vulnerable households in four local government areas of Borno state.

The project embarked by UKaid through the Department For International Development ( DFID) also reached 1326 households with non food items, supported primary healthcare workers in the four local government areas of Maiduguri metropolis, Jere,Dikwa and Konduga with PPEs , carried out sensitisation to communities on COVID-19.

Speaking to newsmen yesterday in Maiduguri, Mr. Sendi Dauda, Project cash coordinator Christian Aid , said the project titled "Localized Preparedness and Response to Primary and Secondary Impacts of COVID-19 on IDPs, Returnees and vulnerable populations in Hard to Reach Areas in Nigeria, is being carried out in Borno and other parts of the country.

Dauda added that partners in Borno state worked with influencers at the communities to serve as people that will do a lot of advocacy at the communities based on clusters they have formed in the communities.

"Our feedback is that the project has been impactful and the idea of the project is because of COVID-19 and impact of the pandemic on the hard to reach people, people that cannot afford daily meals per day. So what we did is to come up with this programme with funding from UKaid to see how we can support the capacity of local partners like Mercy Vincent Foundation, EYN in Borno state, local and state governments and community people.

“What we did was to provide them with cash and also support them with wash and sensitisation. Those that were doing business before now have started their businesses, while some of them used the cash given to them to buy grinding machines to sustain their livelihoods," Mr. Dauda said.

Also speaking, Mr Palmer Okpako, the Executive Director, Mercy Vincent Foundation Maiduguri, noted that while the COVID-19 pandemic is a global challenge, certain groups are particularly vulnerable to both the disease and its secondary impact.

He said internally displaced persons ( IDPs ) are among those likely to be particularly affected by the pandemic, owing to their circumstances.

“IDPs are more at risk of contracting COVID-19 and are more susceptible to complications , owing to cramped living conditions in the camp- like settings , and urban slums; poor nutritional and health status; limited access to sanitation among others," Mr. Okpako said.

He added that many IDPs will be disproportionately affected by the economic repercussion of lockdown measures, given their already precarious circumstances and heavy dependence on casual labour or external support from host communities and humanitarian organisations to meet their basic needs. “As such they will be even more vulnerable to exploitation and abuse ,including sexual violence," Okpako further said.

Gianni Infantino

FIFA president Gianni Infantino delivered a strong defence of his own leadership of the world football which has come under scrutiny from the Swiss judicial authorities.

In a year which has seen the Covid-19 pandemic bring football around the world to a juddering halt, the last issue Infantino needed was high-profile legal trouble in the world governing body’s own back yard.

He has previously dismissed as “absurd” the criminal investigation into a number of unrecorded meetings with the now-departed Swiss Attorney-General Michael Lauber.

But, clearly, he could not ignore the issue in the 70th FIFA Congress organised online out Zurich.

Infantino’s presidential address focused initially on the $1.5bn relief support made available to football associations struggling to cope with the financial impact of coronavirus; he also hailed the success of the Women’s World Cup last year and the promise of greater investment to come.

Then Infantino reeled off a list of inter-governmental organisations with which FIFA was working – as a platform to firm up his own status as a man deternmined to consign a toxic, corruption-scarred image to the past.

It was in this context, said Infantino, that his meetings with Lauber should be viewed.

A new world

Infantino said: “[These were] meetings that were meant to definitively make it clear that the new FIFA was worlds away from the old FIFA.

“Don’t forget that FIFA had become victim to corrupt officials. That’s what courts say all over the world. In 2015 FIFA was toxic, was pronounced dead, an organisation that had severed itself from football.

“So why was I meeting the Swiss Attorney-General? Because it was my duty as FIFA president. I had to do my due diligence because I wanted wanted to liberate FIFA from those old toxic values.

“No organisation can be led into the future if you don’t resolve the past. I thought I could do it but it was not possible.

“That’s precisely why even two days ago I was meeting the US Attorney-General in [Washington] DC to prove that we don’t want to go back to our past, to prove that FIFA has been reformed and to express our gratitude – to say ‘thank you’ that the Department of Justice at the time saved FIFA from itself while others were just standing on the sidelines, watching.”

Infantino promised: “We will continue to fight against corruption in football and we will continue to cooperate with all the authorities all over the world that will help us save and reform football [and] clean it up.”

More condemnation trail allege fake APC stakeholders list in Yobe

SA Political & Legislative Matters, Hon. Aji Yerima Bularafa

By JOE Hemba

The alleged fake list of APC Stakeholders in circulation in Yobe State has received more condemnation within the leadership of the party and the political class in the state.

Barely 24 hours after the State Secretary, Abubakar Bakabe came out to disown the list, the Special Adviser to Gov. Mai Mala Buni on Political and Legislative Matter, Hon. Aji Yerima Bularafa has also added his voice against the purported list.

The Special Adviser in a press statement titled: “FAKE AND MISCHIEVOUS STAKEHOLDERS LIST ON CIRCULATION ON SOCIAL MEDIA”, also disassociate his office and himself from the list. Hon. Bularafa regretted that some “mischief makers are hell bent to create confusion and disharmony among our APC supporter”.

He aligned with the party leadership over the measures they are taking to lunch an investigation into the matter and unmasked those behind the list and punish them accordingly.

Bellow is the full text of his statement:

“The attention of the office of the Special Adviser on Political and Legislative Matters to the Executive Governor of Yobe State has been drawn on a purported and fake list of APC Stakeholders in the 17 LGAs of the State.

"The office of the Special Adviser is not aware and has no connection with the fake and purported list of stakeholders in circulation on the social media which was mischievously posted by one or group of mischief makers who are hell bent to create confusion and disharmony among our APC supporters. “The office of the Special Adviser is hereby disassociating itself from this nefarious act and condemns this mischievous act in its totality. The office is therefore calling on all our teeming supporters of the APC across the 17 LGAs to disregard the fake and purported list going round on the social media outfits.

“The office of the Special Adviser is also happy to have seen the special press release issued and signed by the State Secretary of the APC Yobe State, Alh. Abubakar Bakabe disclaiming and condemning the fake list in circulation. He further reiterated that the State APC would take drastic action to fish out the unscrupulous elements involved in this nefarious and mischievous act with a view to face the wrap of the law no matter how highly placed the person or group of persons may be to serve as deterrent for others to emulate”, the statement reads.

ImpactOnlineNigeria reports that the party leadership in the state through the secretary yesterday equally issues a strong warning against those behind the list.

The party has also planned to convene an Exco meeting where it will try to fish out those faceless people behind the list.

OPINION: Sen. Ahmad Lawan: Tasking a lawmaker

Sen. Ahmed Lawan

By Hassan Adamu Nguru

Since Nigeria’s return to democracy, I have paid more attention to what is happening at the National Assembly and I keenly follow the antecedents of legislators. This is because in a presidential system, the legislature plays the most important roles that directly affect people’s lives. I am more interested in how people’s lives are or were transformed and how governance can have an impact on lives of the people. This is not a way of saying; other arms of government are insignificant. The three arms of government complement each other in so many ways. But the fact is, the legislature stands at the centre when it comes to the people; their present and their future. As a citizen and a firm believer in the dynamism of democracy, I took it upon myself to, on my own, run an appraisal of our politicians. After giving them the mandate to govern or represent us, it is our duty to also pay close attention to what they do and how they fared. Where they let us down, we have to say it, and where they met our expectations, we also have to say it. This is what is called fairness. Each year I subject politicians I voted for and now represent me - to my own appraisal. This is the only way we can keep our leaders on their toes, and it is also the only way that, as citizens, we can empower ourselves to have a say on the way we are governed.

In the first place, how can a lawmaker’s performance be appraised? What will be the yardsticks? Even in finding answers to these questions, I believe there should be a context. What worked as a good performance of a lawmaker in the US Congress may not be relevant in Nigeria; though both countries run the same presidential system of government. Some assess lawmakers based on the number of bills they sponsored. Good as it is, but the lawmaker is much more than the number of bills he sponsored. Above all, in my opinion, the quality of representation and attracting projects for the people are more important in assessing the performance of a legislator.

For Nigerians, Senator Ahmad Lawan is the President of the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and chairman of the National Assembly. He is also among the longest serving lawmakers – having been in the legislature from 1999 to date. But for us he is much more than these. He was a representative in the House of Representatives and then the senate. For us the people of Yobe North senatorial district comprising BadeKarasuwaJakuskoNguru , Machina and Yusufari he is a leader whose commitment to his people is a pacesetter. He always stands firm for the good of Yobe north and for the good of the whole of Yobe state. Senator Ahmad Lawan assumed the leadership of the National Assembly at one of the most difficult times for our country. It is the time of bruising slump in the price of oil in the global market. This is also the time of so many lives-consuming conflicts that have wider impact on the economy and socio-political stability of the country. He became the senate president after many years of ‘unstable’ legislature-executive relationship. Under his leadership, the National Assembly now has the stability it needs to function more effectively, and the executive has all the co-operation it needs from the legislature to make the lives of Nigerians better. At the national level, Senator Ahmad Lawan has been moving in the right direction, solidifying the legislature as the key to political and economic stability of the country. Having been in the National Assembly all through its most turbulent past, he was able to use his experience to continue charging the legislature in the right direction of a mutual relationship, with the executive, based on respect and in the overall interest of all Nigerians. He was able to bring his legislative experience to bear in firmly safeguarding the independence of the legislature without resort to acrimonies. He is facing executive-legislature rifts with the power of dialogue, without resort to headlines grabbing altercations.

At home Senator Ahmad Lawan has been making impact in so many ways – too many to mention. But let me start with jobs creation. For me, jobs for the youths is more important now. Few days ago, the President of the Senate sponsored the training for Yobe youths on GSM phone repairs. The training started across the three senatorial zones of Yobe state. At least 1000 youths benefitted from the training that also includes; hands-on on hardware, software and entrepreneurship development. In this age of increasing relevance of information technology in all aspects of life, the skills youths from all parts of Yobe state acquired from the training will set them on the path of aspiring to be key players in the technology industry. Giving youths what can be described as ‘skills of the moment’ is a way of preparing them for the future. This effort is coming as Senator Ahmad Lawan is also sponsoring the upgrade of Vocational Training Centre Gashua. Although the centre is located in Gashua it will draw trainees from all of six local governments of Yobe north. This emphasis youths and jobs has a background. Empowering youths and making sure they are into work is an important step towards economic prosperity and peace.

Senator Ahmad Lawan was instrumental to the location of Federal University Gashua where it is now – in Gashua. Locating the university in Gashua puts it in a strategically accessible location for all the people of Yobe north senatorial zone. He also followed this up with ensuring that the Act Establishing the university has been signed by President Muhammadu Buhari. Through his efforts hostels that can accommodate 2000 students are taking up at the university. Already, work is ongoing for the establishment of a 10-beds clinic in the university. The world class ICT centre the university now has was a result of the commitment of Senator Ahmad Lawan to educational development of the zone. Our senatorial zone is one of the parts of Nigeria referred to as ‘educationally disadvantaged.’ Many missed out on education not because they are not interested but because travelling far away for university education comes with a heavy cost. It is to the credit of Senator Ahmad Lawan that the only university in our zone is getting all the facilities it needs to qualify as a standard university that can meet the skills and manpower needs of the people.

Crucial to development for rural and agrarian communities are roads, which enable people to move around freely for business and social engagements. It is to the credit of Senator Ahmad Lawan that he facilitated the reconstruction of Nguru-Gashua-Baymari road which is nearing completion. For us the people of Yobe north and some parts of Yobe east this road is the most important. Only those of us with an idea of the state of this road before the reconstruction can appreciate how it can transform our communities.

In the area of healthcare, a standard 150-bed Maternal and Child Health hospital is at completion stage in Gashua. The hospital located on Yusufari road is aptly located to service the healthcare needs of all the local governments in Yobe North senatorial zone. For years, the lawmaker had also been using legislative influence in ensuring that the Federal Medical Centre Nguru is resourceful enough to be a referral hospital for Yobe north. Similarly, roads and drainages projects are currently going on in Gashua, Yusufari and Jakusko. There is the now on-going Gasamu-Amshi-Gorgaram road which is also currently ongoing – an important rural road.

On another social front, Senator Ahmad Lawan Isamiyya built has model schools, in all the local governments in his senatorial zone. He also sponsored the mass wedding of women from indigent families, which eased the social obligation burden on many families. Each year from 2017 to date he sponsored medical outreach in which people received critical medical treatment free. Herders benefitted from cattle vaccination he sponsors annually. He also influenced many TEFUND interventions for tertiary institutions in his zone and scholarships opportunities for many aspiring scholars teaching at these institutions.

For a lawmaker who has been in the legislature for 20-years these are only recent projects. Beyond bringing notable projects to his zone, Senator Ahmad Lawan has been able to be a unifier of the zone through always ensuring that whatever projects he is bringing and whatever jobs opportunities secured are shared equitably across all local governments of his zone. So, far he raised the bar of leadership and representation, at home and nationally.
