Troops of Sector 2 headquarters of Operation Lafiya Dole, Damaturu today embark on a road-show to create awareness against heart related disease.
The awareness campaign according to Acting Commander Army Level II Field Hospital, Damaturu, Major James Terna Agbe said the event was organized to mark the global World Heart Day, a day set aside by the United Nation to create awareness against cardiovascular disease.
Major Agbe had earlier delivered a lecture to the troops on the importance of the heart to the body and how to properly take care of the heart to avoid cardiovascular diseases.
According to Major Agbe, statistics have revealed over N20 million people die of heart related disease constituting the highest cause of death in the world.
“Frankly, heart diseases are the leading cause of death globally including Nigeria. There are several measure we can take as individuals to control these diseases or even prevent them at all. Things like; healthy diet, less salt, less sugar, eat more of fresh vegetables and fruits and stopping smoking completely, reducing alcoholic intake to the barest minimum, checking your weight, checking your diabetes status regularly”, Major Agbe informed.
Speaking on the theme of this year’s World Heart Day, which is titled “Use Heart to beat Cardiovascular Disease”, Major Agbe informed that eating foods that are friendly to the heart and constant exercise can keep an active heart that will ensure a healthy body free from diseases.
Our Correspondent reports that the soldiers who embarked on a road-show on the streets of Damaturu to create awareness to the community also distributed flyers to motorists and residents with key messages on how to take care of the heart.
