FG donates 69 trailers of assorted grains for over 41,000 households in Yobe

The Federal Government through the ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development today donated assorted grains to Yobe State government.

 

The grains which are in 69 trailer loads are expected to be distributed to 41,566 households in Yobe state which has a population of over 2.5 million people in the last census count.

 

This suggests that only  8.5% of the population of the state will be benefiting from the food donation.

 

The grains were presented to the state government by the Director General National Emergency Management Agency(NEMA), AVM MA Mohammed on behalf of the Honourable Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development Sadiya Umar Farouq.

 

The North East Zonal Coordinator of NEMA Ishaya Chonoko Isa who represented the DG NEMA said that grains were released from the National Food Reserve following the approval of President Mohammadu Buhari as palliatives for vulnerable people affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

 

We are here to present to you assorted grains from the National Food Reserve, approved by the President and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari GCFR as palliative for distribution to vulnerable persons affected by threcent restriction of movement to curtail the spread of COVID-19 pandemic,” he said.

He mentioned the items to include “i. Maize 957.24 Metric tonnes (32 trailer load), ii. Millet 120.62 Metric tonnes (4 trailer load) and iii. Sorghum 1,000.43 Metric tonnes (33 trailer load)These food items are meant to cater for 41, 566 households.

 

 

The DG NEMA noted that Yobe State has enjoyed other programs and interventions from the federal government especially farmers with more still to come on the way.


His words: “Your Excellency, it is important to put on record that Yobe State has benefitted from an Emergency Agricultural Intervention Programme which was approved by President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019. It commenced with the verification of affected farmers and was immediately followed by the distribution of farm inputs. The inputs already distributed comprised of seeds/seedlings, agrochemicals and knapsack sprayers. A total of 11, 079 farmers were verified and are expected to benefit from the final phase of the intervention which is fertilizer. Modified liquid fertilizer will be supplied for the distribution in place of solid NPK which was suspended in 2019 based on the directives of the National Security Adviser.

The intervention in Yobe State also include livestock in the form of poultry, where a total of 570 farmers have been scheduled to benefit. The process for supply of the poultry is in progress. The initial cost approved for the procurement is currently not realistic. Therefore, the contractors have requested for a review and it is receiving due attention”, he said.


he called on the people of the state and the state government to take the flooding prediction for 2020 seriously as it has already began to manifest in many states of the federation.

 

The items were collected by the permanent secretary ministry for Humanitarian, Affairs and  Disaster Management, Ibrahim Shaibu.

 

He expressed gratitude to the Federal Government for the donation, promising that the food will immediately be dispatched  to the rural areas for the beneficiaries.
