The elections in  the 178 council wards will also be held for the councillorship positions  as legislatures at the local government councils.

The Chairman of the commission Dr. Mamman Mohammed announced this today Tuesday in Damaturu at the meeting of election actors and other stakeholders including politicians, media and the security at his office in Damaturu.

ImpactOnlineNigeria recalled that the last Local government election in the state was held in February, 2017 and their tenures has since elapsed in 2019. The former Governor Ibrahim Gaidam was however managing the council area with the appointment of Care Taker Committee Chairmen and later Directors of Personale Management to this moment.

The Yobe SIEC Chairman disclosed that today’s meeting marks  the beginning of  political activities for the  local government elections in the next three months as required by law.

He promised to provided a level playing ground as a commission  for all political parties while calling on politicians  to be tolerant and play the game by the rules”

“To conduct a free fair and credible election, we need a  conducive  environment and perfectively level playground and follow the rules of the game. This is why we all gathered here to rub minds and freely discuss ways and means of conducting a smooth, free, fair credible and most importantly acceptable election in the State.

“All hands must be on deck to ensure a complete success, among several important areas, there are four major sectors that are of paramount importance to this success story. These are the politicians, themselves including the electorates, the security agencies, the Press and we the election management body itself.

“To be able to get good governance, we need to elect good people to run the affairs of these Local Governments. This start from party primaries, nomination of candidates which shall come from the registered political party (ies).

“The political leaders should prevail on their candidates  and their supporters to be peaceful and tolerant in their political campaign. All forms of political violence should be avoided. We see all those perpetrating violence as enemies of democracy because you cannot achieve any meaningful socio- economic development without peace,” Dr. Mamman said.

Dr. Mamman noted that his commission is backed Section 197 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 and Yobe State House of Assembly law 2003 which  established  the Yobe State Independent electoral Commission with its clear mandate to among other things to “undertake, organize and supervise elections into the local government councils in the state”.

He added that, “It is based on this constitutional provision that the Yobe State Independent electoral commission plans to conduct local governments  election into the (17) Local Governments and 178 wards in the state on the 5th of December 2020”.

Dr. Mamman while soliciting the support of security agents and the media to have a smooth elections appealed:

“Member of the various security agencies have the task of keeping peace and maintaining law and order before, during and after election. When it comes to general security and surveillance, one can easily link this with general development and as we forge ahead for development in Yobe we should sustain the peace and security of our democratic process.

“ The role of the  media is very important in democratic dispensation and the various media outfits in the state should join hands in further enlightening the electorates on the ways and means to success in our journey to democratic success,” he appealed.
