Dr. Goje

By  JOE Hemba , Damaturu

The Executive Secretary of Yobe State Emergency Management Agency(YOSEMA) Dr. Mohammed Goje has explained that the media has effectively  helped in the dissemination of information about covid 19 palliatives in the state.

Dr. Goje who briefed journalists in Damaturu on Wednesday said because of the effective involvement of the media in the distribution of the covid 19 palliatives, the people and the youth in the state are well armed with the information as to the state of the condition of all supplies in the state.

The YOSEMA Boss added that, the media having played that critical role has doused any tension in the state or fear of anyone attacking his warehouse for food materials.

He noted that his agency swiftly embarked on the distribution of any food and non-food materials that were brought into the state since March this year as directed by Gov. Mai Mala Buni.

According to him, SEMA has being able to make distribution of food twice this year to all the seventeen local government areas in the state.

“Gentlemen of the press, I want to tell you that all the palliatives supplies that we have received from donors have been distributed across all communities in Yobe State. Apart from the ones we received from donors, the governor too has continue to support the supplies steadily.

“From March, 2020 up till this moment, our distribution has surpassed over 69,000 households in the state. This is aside the routine distribution that we normalcy give to our displaced and vulnerable people in the host communities across the state.

“We are happy that the role you have played has journalists has effectively giving the people the desired information on the state of our palliatives so we do not have any fear that our warehouses will be attacked like what we are seeing in other places in the country,” Dr. Goje said.

While expressing regret over the massive looting of warehouses across the country, Goje, “I feel will very bad and I feel its not the right thing to be done. It’s really sad but going forward, donors and government should  make sure that what is meant for the people is presented to them as soon as it is provided and made available. By that, there wont be any friction and the kind of things that we are seeing now”.

EndSARS: APC Acting Chairman Appeals for Peace, Normalcy

By JOE Hemba,  Damaturu

The  APC Caretaker/Extraordinary National Convention Committee Chairman and Governor of Yobe State, Hon. Mai Mala Buni has appealed for peace and normalcy across the country in the wake of the EndSARS protest in some parts of the county.

Gov. Buni in a statement he personally signed and made available by his Director General,  Media and Press Affairs Mamman Mohammed in Damaturu said the APC was saddened by the tragedy that ensued from a peace protests by citizens for their legitimate rights.

He pleaded with the protesters to stop the protest for corporate and collective interest of our country Nigeria.

The APC he said acknowledged the rights of the protesters and the agitations but regretted how the protests was hijacked by some hoodlums to unleash terror on innocent citizens, destruction of property and unwantom looting.

The statement condoles  with the families of those who lost their lives as well as pray God to repose their souls.

Below is the full text of the statement.

The All Progressives Congress is saddened by the unfortunate tragedy that had enveloped some parts of the country in the last few days by hoodlums who took over what was supposed to be a peaceful protest against the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the Nigeria Police and therefore plead with Nigerians to halt the #ENDSARS protests for the collective corporate interest of our dear country. We have no other country than Nigeria.

We are committed to the ideals of democracy and we recognize the inalienable rights of our citizens to demand for changes in conditions which trample on their liberties, freedom of association, freedom of speech and wellbeing through peaceful means and rule of law.

We acknowledge the peaceful commencement of the protests until it became violent, destructive and disorderly as hoodlums regrettably seized the opportunity in the protests and virtually took over.

On behalf of the leadership and membership of the All Progressives Congress (APC), we solemnly condole with the families of our countrymen and the families of policemen who lost their loved ones and pray that Almighty God will grant them the fortitude to bear the loss.

We also extend our empathy to all those whose properties were torched and pray that Almighty God will replenish it. We pray we never experience such avoidable and unnecessary horrendous carnage in our dear fatherland.

It is gladdening that President Muhammadu Buhari GCFR, had quickly responded and disbanded the Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the Nigeria Police (SARS) as demanded by the protesting youth.

The party also welcomed the decision for comprehensive reforms, including the review of salaries of the Nigeria Policemen as announced by Mr President.

Our dear Compatriots, let us reflect and embrace peace; at a time of national tragedy such as this, it should not be a time for playing politics, it is no time to dance to the gallery to score cheap political points. It is a time for introspection and Nigeria first. Lets come together irrespective of our political, religious and ethnic differences we should rally around the government to build sanity and strengthen peace and unity to ensure the corporate existence of our country.

To our youth, your message has been heard loud, clear, and well understood. The next stage that must follow is the needed engagement with all the structures of government to address all the concerns around the protest and effectiveness of government in general. It is imperative for the youths to extricate themselves from the activities of the criminal elements who have taken over the protests and perpetrating violence, destruction of property and attacking innocent Nigerians.

As a party, we will take every step to support the government to bring this unwholesome situation to an immediate end. We will make sure that all those found culpable will face the wrath of the law. For it is the desire of all Nigerians that a peaceful atmosphere return to the country for the good of greatest number of our dear countrymen.

The party therefore join President Muhammadu Buhari GCFR in appealing to our youths to call off the protests for peace and normalcy to return to our dear country.

The more united we are as a people, the more peace we have and the more secured we are in our country; the more progressive we all become and the more abundant shared prosperity for our children.

God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria,"

Education is crucial to ending child marriage - Plan International

 By JOE Hemba, Maiduguri

A non-governmental organisations (NGO) Plan International has said that communities leaders and governments at all levels must to do more to ensure out-of-school girls back into education which will be crucial to ending child marriage in Borno state.

To end child marriage, education must be accessible, good quality, safe and girl-friendly, while calling upon the community to recognise that progress on global education goals cannot be made without tackling child marriage. Gender Equality and Inclusive Coordinator, Plan International, Mrs Chinelo Amaechina stated this during this year commemoration

"International Day of the Girl Child," theme: My Voice, Our Equal Future" organised at Gubio IDP camp in Maiduguri recently emphasised that there must be a broader effort to discourage this menace.

She noted that the reality is that when girls are married young, their education and other opportunities to live a safe, healthy and empowered life, come to an end.

Mrs Chinelo said education alone is not enough to end child marriage. Cooperation is needed across government ministries and with civil society to end the practice.

"In the community where we worked we understand that a lot of young girls are already married and with children, we give education to adequately take care of themselves and the young ones.

"We know that in all over the world they have a different definition for a girl or child, here where we worked the UN define a child as somebody below the age of 18, we understand that this definition doesn't stand because you see that at the age of ten or eleven someones is already married.

"So they see them as an adult, so we do a lot of education and awareness to sensitized them that even though those girls are productive, but they are still a child and cannot take care of another child that is the essence of canvassing against early marriage and the rest of them," she said.

She noted that if education is to be a successful tool to help girls avoid early marriage, they need to have access to quality education and schools that are safe and girl-friendly.

"Girls enrollment in school is very very low here, but with the intervention of Plan International and others development agency that is working in Borno State, now a lot of families are realizing the need of girls education and they are supporting it.

"We are breaking that barrier we are not there yet but we are making effort to ensure that by the year 2023 or thereabout we are going to have a considerable number of girls who are in school and who are clamouring to continue their education from primary to the tertiary institution and later to become somebody in their communities," Chinelo explained.

In her remarks, The State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development was represented by Hajiya Aishatu Shani told the gathering that the current administration is working hard to ensure that more school-age girls enrolled in schools. She stressed that education initiatives that help girls to avoid child marriage must include awareness-raising campaigns for parents and community leaders on the benefits of girls’ education, scholarship programmes for girls, equipping schools and providing training for teachers on how to ensure a safe environment for all students.

"Changing cultural practices and attitudes that allow child marriage to continue takes years, and requires a deep and lasting commitment to work with families and communities to make change happen.

“By reaching out to communities and empowering the girls vulnerable to child marriage, we can begin to counter the idea that girls are somehow of lesser value.

“It will take time but we must address the root causes of child, early and forced marriage, including poverty and gender inequality."Aishatu disclosed.

The event was full of activities of girls entertained the guests with the presentation of speeches, poems, playlist and traditional dances. Also, dignity kits were distributed to the adolescent displaced girls as part of the activities to made the day colorful.

He said with the collaboration of the Nigerian military, Civilian Joint Taskforce and hunters, the communities where the IDPs have been resettled are under adequate security coverage.

The Commissioner added that although the resettlement is ongoing, it is only for those IDPs who voluntarily want to go back home, saying that no IDP will be forced to return home except willingly.

"We have started resettlement of people of different communities since the inception of this administration. Following the completion of reconstruction of houses destroyed by the Boko Haram terrorists in different communities, we have to resettle people because they want to go home to start their businesses.

"We have resettled the people of Ajiri, later kauri and  Auno then Kukawa and Baga, and now we are focusing on how we will resettle seven more communities in Marte and Gwoza local government areas of Borno state. About one million IDPs have be resettled so far to various communities.

"In the communities the IDPs have been resettled, we provided amenities such as boreholes , schools, hospitals and distributed cash to the returnees to meet some of their pressing needs," Gubio said.

The Audacity of Death: A tribute to my scholar, spiritual leader, Sheikh Ibrahim Damaturu..

Late Sheikh Ibrahim Damaturu

By Hussaini Mohammed Isa

Once again, the intrepidly cold hands of death has struck again, this time around, its hands snatched away our humble but brilliant, amiable and hard-working islamic scholar, Sheikh Ibrahim Muhammad Damaturu from us in a rude and shocking manner.
What a nasty "World Teachers Day" gift?
With both sadness and respect, I hope to capture Sheikh Ibrahim Damaturu's stunning contributions to the Islamic World. He was one of the best known Islamic scholars in our country. This is opinion backed by facts.
In Sheikh Ibrahim Damaturu, true scholarship and humility meet, he left no one indifferent to both the depth and of his analysis of the Holy Qur'an or the integrity of his person.
Islam is one such rope of Almighty Allah, if we hold on to this rope, follow the shariah and are mindful of Allah in every situation and in everything we do, we are safe, ALHAMDULILLAH, Sheikh Ibrahim Damaturu was grasping this rope until the last minute of his life.
Even when it became apparent to him that his time was off, he kept invoking Allah on his deathbed with his breath because he couldn't speak anymore.
He was very generous with his profound insight and knowledge, he delivered Tafseer 4 times a week all-year-round excluding the month of Ramadan. His tafseer sessions covered Al-Hidaya Mosque (Nasarawa bye-pass), Abba Ibrahim Housing Estate Mosque, First Bank Mosque and Gwange Mosque. This is in addition to several other sessions he held every week.
He was a strong pillar in the propagation of SUNNAH not only in Yobe but in Nigeria as a whole, he played a crucial role in the fight against BIDI'AH, certainly, he would remembered for this.
The last time I set my eyes on him was in May this year when I visited the office of the Executive Secretary of SEMA, Dr. Mohammed Goje though we spoke on phone about 4weeks ago. He had been my scholar and spiritual leader throughout my 5-year stay in Damaturu.
His sudden passing will remain one of my greatest personal losses of an unassuming and brilliant scholar. But surely, I will keep him in memory as role model.
My sincere condolences to his family, students, Jama'atul Izalatul Bid'ah Wa-Ikamatus-sunnah, Yobe State University and indeed Yobe State Government. It is our prayer that Almighty Allah will console the bereaved family and grant him Al-Jannatul Firdausi.

“Malam Ibrahim Damaturu has touched and affected many lives during his life time. He was a great scholar, a teacher, a father, a preacher who devoted his time spreading the message of Islam and preaching peace to everyone.

“He has no problem with where you come from as long as you are a human being. He was a peace loving person who transverse the state and beyond teaching people. He spends most of his income feeding the poor and the need. May Allah grant him Aljannah Firdaus,” Huztaz Algoni said.
