AfDB Sets to End Rural Water Scarcity in Yobe

 The African Development Bank under the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Programme is committed to proffering a permanent solution to rural water supply in the Yobe State. 

 The State Programme Manager, Engr. Mohammed Idi Mamman disclosed this to newsmen while taking an assessment of damaged existing water facilities and communities faced with water problems in the state.

 Engr. Mohammed informed that the program in a few weeks will commence massive rehabilitation  of existing non-functional  boreholes across the states in rural communities for the supply of water both for human and animal need. 

 Yobe State is one of the in the country with a very high livestock production capacity but the animals are normally faced with water scarcity due to the short rain supply in the state associated with drought and desertification. 

 Most of the herders rely on borehole for water supply for their animals and some of them have to travel long distances to communities with such facilities. 

 Yobe State AfDB-RWSSP Programme Manager who was at one of the communities affected with acute water scarcity at Garin Tozo and Dazigau communities  in Nanagere local Government area of the state conveyed that assurances of Gov. Mai Mala Buni and the commitment of AfDB to members of the community that their more than a decade long problem of water scarcity will soon be over. 



 The PM also visited some communities in Gujba Local Government where he inspected some equipment supplied for the drilling of new boreholes, stressing that, “the commitment of this government is to provide rural communities with and increase their access to safe and clean drinking water”.

 Gujba Local Government is one of the Local government in the State that was worse affected by the Boko Haram crisis. Most of the water facilities across the local government were destroyed by Boko haram insurgents. 

“In the coming weeks, we are going to begin the massive drilling of new boreholes in various communities in the state. These projects are aimed at fulfilling the mandate of His Excellency Gov. Mai Mala Buni on the provision of safe and clean drinking water in rural areas across the state,” Engr. Mohammed informed.
