COVID 19: NGO Collaborative donates BCC/IEC materials to Yobe

The INGO Collaborative, a partnership  of different International Non-Governmental Oganizations working in Yobe State on improving  COVID 19 Vaccines Access through behavioural change, yesterday presented  some behavioural change communication materials to Yobe State Government.

 

Mr. Sabiu Suleiman Shehu,  the Behavioral Change Communications Program Manager for Mercy Corps Nigeria together with the Project Manager, CARE Nigeria, Dr. Esther  Damilola Avidingh both presented the materials to the Executive Secretary, Yobe State Primary Healthcare Management Board, Dr. Kundi Machina in his office in Damaturu.


The materials presented include COVID-19 vaccine guide, COVID 19  Referral Forms and hygiene kits to support the unscaling of COVID 19 vaccines among the people at the community levels in the state.


Mr.  Shehu, on behalf of INGO Partners of the Vaccine Access Program lauded the commitment of all stakeholders through the support so far received from the frontline workers, department and agencies in the state as well as the State Social Mobilization team.

He explained that  the goal of promoting vaccine access, confidence, and uptake in line with the recently launched SCALES 3.0 strategy, INGO Collaborative in partnership with the social mobilization team, developed a COVID-19 vaccine referral form and vaccine access guide to complement government efforts.


 “In line with the purpose of collaborating with SPHCB to support the COVID-19 rollout campaigns, including door-to-door sensitization and development of messaging through the use of already existing community structures from the date of execution of this MOU until.


from the date of execution of this MoU until April 30th, 2023, Mercy Corps developed a draft MoU to formally set out the parameters of the relationship between Mercy Corps and YPHCMB in the development and implementation of agreed projects, beginning from the date of execution of this MOU,”  he said.


I his response, the ES YBSPHMB Dr. Kundi Machina thank the INGOs for their efforts and the interventions they are making in the state.

 

He advised them to always collaborate with the board on any project they are embarking on to avoid duplication of efforts.

 

“It is very important that you collaborate with us in anything that you are doing so that we can identify gaps and do the right interventions. This will help us to avoid duplication of efforts and wastages” Dr. Machina advised.

 

Highlights of the event was the presentation of the BCC/IEC materials to the Executive Secretary, Dr. Kundi Machina  by Mr. Shehu and Dr. Esther Avindigh on behalf of the INGO Collaborative.

Yobe Ahead of state in FG Livestock Ranching Development

Yobe State Government is the leading state in the development of the Federal Government Ranching Initiative called Livestock Development Centre (LIDC).

 

The Commissioner for Agriculture in the State Dr. Mairo Ahmshi disclosed this at a Ministerial Press Briefing Organized by the NUJ, Yobe State Council for ministries to give account of their activities.

 

According to Dr. Amshi,, Yobe State Government has established three Livestock Development Centers in the three senatorial districts of the state. The ranches are located at , Jakusko/ Nasari grazing reserve (49,600 htr), Badegana, Bursari  (19,000ha) and Gurjaje, Fika (9,300 ha) all gazetted.

 

The commissioner disclosed that the Yobe State Government has already gone ahead of many states in the country in  providing  social amenities on the grazing reserves so as to reduce crisis and problems related to farmers/ headers.

 

The main reason for establishing the Centers is to provide utmost security, minimize herders movement from one place to another, minimize farmer herder conflicts, improve Livestock value chain, dairy industry and revenue generation for the State. To crown it all the State Government has already provided some structures like; Boreholes, Earth-dams, Veterinary clinic, Dispensary, Primary school for herders Children, feedlot, feed mill, Artificial insemination centers, Fish ponds, Herders settlements, Milk collection centers, access road, Electricity etc,” she explained.

 

Dr. Mairo added that the state government has a strong commitment to the development of livestock and there embarked on the vaccination dogs, goats, sheep and other livestock in the state on a mass scale.

 

It is on record that from the year 2019 to 2020 over 846,598 herds of Cattle, Sheep and goats were vaccinated.it may also interest you to know that over 751 dogs were vaccinated within the same period. For the year 2022, the Ministry in collaboration with ICRC are currently undergoing some vaccination excises within the State. So far, over 450,000 exterse herds of Cattle, Sheep and Goats have been treated. The excises is still going on and we are expecting more numbers of Animals to be vaccinated,” Dr. Mairo explained.

 

Dr. Mairo also announced that “Yobe has 135 veterinary surgeons and 47 animal scientist with 5 equipped veterinary clinics, one each in a zonal office as well as 17 Area Veterinary/Livestock offices across the state as additional measure of boasting animal production in the state.”.

 

She added that:

 

In the year 2021, Yobe state has come up with Agricultural Policy which support both livestock and other agricultural sector. This could be one of the reasons the Federal Government through Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (FMARD) collaborated with Yobe State and set up 3 livestock Development Centers (LDC) one each in a senatorial zone of the state, namely

 

 

Furthermore, Ahmadu Bello University Zaria in collaboration with Yobe State Government has established National Animal Production Research Institute (NAPRI) North East Out-Reach Station at Damaturu as well as secured approval from FGN to participate in Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Program (L-Pres programme).

 

Yobe State Government also has a Livestock Investigation and Breeding Center (LIBC) located in Nguru thus, the State has expressed interest in the livestock Breed Improvement Programme. These are all to enhance livestock and livestock product production.

 

Finally, the State Government in its effort to boost irrigation farming in the State, over 2000ha of Land has been developed at LAVA irrigation scheme, already preparatory activities for the year 22 farming season is taking place,” .

Climate Change: Yobe NUJ Lunches Tree Planting Campaign

The Nigerian Union of Journalists, Yobe State Council today begin the massive planting of trees to cushion the effect of desertification and attendant global warning. 

 The event  was launched by the State Commissioner for Environment, Hon. Yakubu Sidi Karasuwa took place at the council’s expansive land mass in Damaturu, the State capital. 

 The commissioner for environment who was represented by the Director Forestry in the Ministry Alh. Garba Tahir said the union has taken the right step against the challenging global warming threats that the world in general is facing. 

 He noted that the initiative of the Yobe State NUJ should be emulated by other organisation especially considering the fact that Yobe is one of the frontline states being devastated by desertification.

 “Global warming is real and all hands must be on deck to tackle its negative effect. The leadership and members of the NUJ in Yobe State are in the right direction in tackling this problem. This initiative is highly commendable and I call on other organisation the state to emulate the NUJ,” the commissioner said.

Earlier in his remarks, the Chairman of NUJ Yobe State Council, Comrade Rajab Mohammed Ismail said the union decided to embark on the campaign to encourage other people to plant trees in their homes, as well as make a forest at the state secretariat of the Union. 

 Comrade Rajab explained that, close to 100 species  including economic trees were planted at the secretariat. 




 According to him, the trees were bought by members at a mini fund raising during one of the congress meetings. 

 “All the trees that we are planting here today were bought and donated by our members. We were able to achieve this at a mini fund raising in one of our congress meetings. I thank all my members for their contributions and cooperation to the success of this event. 

 “The NUJ is making a bold  statement here that all and sundry should plant a tree in their vicinity. As for us at the NUJ, we are going to turn our secretariat into a forest,” Rajab said. 

 The event was witnessed by the Director, Bureau for Public Procurement, Yobe State, Samaila Adamu, the General Manager, Yobe Printing Corporation, Gambo Dahiru and, the Director Finance Ministry of Transport and Energy, Alhaji Bashir Baba Geidam. Each of them also planted a tree at the event.

Northeast Youths Award Sen President Tafawa Balewa Platinum Excellence Award

The Northeast APC Youth Stakeholders Forum yesterday honored the Senate President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Dr. Ahmed Ibrahim Lawan with the prestigious award of Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Platium Award of Leadership Excellence.

 

Presenting the award at Gashua, the home town of the senate president at a grand reception rally organized by the Yobe State Government, the a leader of the group, Haruna Sarduna said the Sen. Lawan’s  antecedents as a law maker and a political leaders has earned him the honor to go into the hall of fame with the former Prime Minister of the northern region Late  Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa.

 

“Sen. Lawan’s robust representation and constructive and stable National Assembly as the chairman has not only benefited his on senatorial district alone, but the State, the Northeast region and Nigeria as a whole,” Sarduna said.

 

According to him, since the death of Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, the northeast region and indeed Nigeria has not found a leader of such qualities until the emergence of Sen. Ahmed Lawan.

 

He stressed that, Sen. Lawan has through his leadership has attracted unprecedented development projects and institutions to the Northeast region including the establishment of the Northeast Development Commission(NEDC) which was established to accelerate the reconstruction resettlement and rehabilitation of the region destroyed by the over one decade of Boko Haram insurgency.

 

“Through the stable leadership  of Sen. Lawan at the National Assembly, President Buhari’s was able to deliver the dividends of democracy to the teaming population of the country with the provision of laudable projects including the construction of roads, building of major bridges across the country, provision of electricity and making available loans to small scale farmers to boost the local economy of the people,” Sarduna informed.

 

In Yobe State for instance, Sarduna informed that Sen. Lawan has brought projects like the  electrification of the state from North to the Eastern part and the Mega Water supply projects being undertaking by the Federal Government in the Southern part of the State as well as the Wachakal Airport near Nguru town.
