Gov. Buni presents N217 Billion Budget for 2024, Emphasises Development and Economic Recovery

Governor Mai Mala Buni presented the 2024 Appropriation and Finance Bills to the State House of Assembly  outlining a comprehensive budget of N217 billion with a focus on consolidating ongoing projects and fueling new initiatives for economic recovery.

The Governor who  highlighted the uniqueness of the budget, labelled  it as the "Budget of Consolidation and Economic Recovery." The proposed budget allocates N94.16 billion (43.39%) for recurrent expenditure and N122.84 billion (56.61%) for capital expenditure. 

He  emphasised the commitment to completing existing projects and funding new ones that directly impact the lives of the citizens.

The governor provided a detailed review of the 2023 budget, acknowledging the challenges faced due to global economic factors and subsidy removal. 

He reported a 58.2% success rate as of September 30, 2023, with achievements ranging from infrastructure development, healthcare enhancements, educational facilities, and support for agriculture and small businesses.

While giving the highlights of 2023 Achievements, the governor noted:

- Notable expenditures included the construction of Geidam modern market, establishment of sesame and seeds clearing factories, additional work at Potiskum Trailer Park, and the construction of a Mega Shopping Mall in Damaturu.

- Substantial funds were allocated to road constructions and rehabilitations, borehole drilling, livestock development centers, medical equipment procurement, and the renovation of schools.

- In the governance sector, allocations covered the provision of official vehicles, construction, and renovation of office structures, and support for various ministries, departments, and agencies.

Governor Buni also  outlined key sectors targeted by the 2024 budget to include; Administration (N26.68 billion) focusing  on providing conducive working atmospheres for civil servants, completion of Ministry of Budget Office complex, Multipurpose Hall, NLC Secretariat, and renovations of various offices.

Another sector targeted by the budget is the Economic Sector with  N107.21 billion which will cover the Completion of markets, trailer parks, shopping malls, and investments in power supply. Infrastructure developments include inter-community and township roads, a central flyover in Damaturu, and support for agriculture.

For Law, Peace, and Justice the sum of N3.89 billion is earmarked for the Construction of new high courts, magistrate courts, and residences to ensure speedy dispensation of justice.

In the Social Sector N79.20 billion is voted in the Investments in healthcare facilities, road site plantation, and environmental projects. The education sector will receive allocations for the construction of new schools, procurement of teaching materials, and support for higher education.

Governor Buni reassured citizens of his  government's commitment to progress and development, pledging to prioritize citizens' well-being and prosperity.

He acknowledged the collaborative efforts of the Yobe State House of Assembly and expressed hope for meticulous scrutiny and swift passage of the proposed bills.

The Speaker Yobe State House of Assembly Rt. Hon. Buba Chiromo said the bill will be speedily passed for accelerated development of the state.

As the budget awaits legislative deliberations, Yobe State anticipates a transformative fiscal year ahead, focusing on consolidating gains and fostering economic recovery
